SF State President Leslie Wong receives national award for leadership

San Francisco State University President Leslie E. Wong has received the 2014 Asian Pacific Americans in Higher Education (APAHE) President’s Award in recognition of his outstanding leadership and contributions to the field of higher education.

The APAHE national Board of Directors presented President Wong with the award during its 27th annual national conference, held April 10-11 in San Francisco. President Wong delivered remarks during the opening session of the conference.

Crafted in the shape of a Chinese horse, the President’s Award statue symbolizes intelligence, strength and the ability to lead others. “APAHE is proud of a university president like Dr. Wong who has unselfishly dedicated his time, talents and energy to support the development of students and professionals,” said APAHE President Wyman Fong.

“It is important that Asian Americans step up and take leadership positions in higher education and important that those of us who hold leadership roles also serve as mentors,” Wong said. “I’m deeply appreciative to APAHE for this honor and am firmly committed to continuing my work towards this great goal.”

Wong has served as SF State’s 13th president since August 2012. An Oakland native, he maintains research interests in educational technology, academic assessment and the role of underrepresented minorities in the academy. He serves on numerous boards and community organizations including Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics, the Bay Area Council and the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce.

APAHE is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the educational opportunities for Asian and Pacific American students; promoting and supporting the hiring, retention, and advancement of qualified Asian and Pacific American faculty, staff, and administrators; and creating a better understanding of issues in the public affecting Asian and Pacific Americans in higher education.
