Radical Hope: Leading with Love, Courage, and Action

Participants may select only one option for a full-day, preconference session from the following workshops below.

 

Option 1: AANAPISI’s Have Come of Age: Building a National Network and Harnessing the Impact of Collective Programming (Capacity: 300)

The purpose of this annual, national convening, is to share, inform, and enrich AANAPISI grantees (former and present), eligible AANAPISI institutions, colleges/universities that serve AANHPI students, and community partners about the impact that AANAPISI federal funding has had over the past 17 years. The program will include plenary sessions regarding the national and federal landscape of AANAPISIs and updates on regional efforts. Breakout sessions include, but not limited to, interactive discussions on: (1) How to Write an AANAPISI Grant, (2) Establishing a New AANAPISI Grant, (3) Mental Health Needs on AANAPISI campuses, (4) Asian American Studies/Culturally Responsive Curriculum Development, (5) Institutionalization of AANAPISI, and more. Join us for a day of networking and learning!

Lunch will be sponsored by an AANAPISI Partner and provided at this session.


Option 2:LEAP Advance Session for Alumni (Capacity: 30)

Continued professional development and networking for LDPHE and LEAP Advance alumni. Further build connections among LEAP participants, further explore opportunities for leadership, and development of skills to successfully advance professionally.

Option3:New to Higher Ed, New to APAHE + Cultural Tour(Capacity: 50)                          9:00 am-12:00 pm

This first part of the morning session is designed for professionals who are new to their positions in higher education and/or new to attending APAHE. Overview of APAHE will be covered. Smaller group discussions will focus on transition issues and strategies for those moving into new positions.

Oakland Cultural Immersion Tour                                                  12:30-4:00 pm

Dr. Bobby Nakamoto-Chabot College, Dr. Newin Orante-Skyline College, Brandon Yanari-Evergreen Valley College, Tomoko Ha-TKO Consulting, Jacqueline Toy-San Diego State University, Jessica Mow-Cosumnes River College, Romeo Garcia-Cypress College

The second half of the day will be a cultural immersion tour of Oakland aboard a comfortable charter bus. This afternoon tour of Oakland will focus on sites with historical and cultural significance. Engage with communities around Oakland and learn about the rich history of activism and education in the northern California East Bay.

Option4: Student Pre-Conference +Cultural tour(Capacity: 50)

The Elements of Leadership: Uniting the Four Nations              9:00 am-12:00 pm

This first part of this full-day session from 9:00 am – 12 noon is designed for student leaders who will learn about the history of APAHE, network with peers, and discover their leadership elements inspired by “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” Students will learn each of the elements of leadership (earth, water, fire, and air), the specific element they personally connect most closely to, and will understand how to master all elements of leadership when leading with hope, love, courage, and action.

Cultural Immersion Tour of Oakland                                              12:30 – 4:00 pm

The second half of the day will be a cultural immersion tour of Oakland aboard a comfortable charter bus. We will focus on sites with historical and cultural significance at Oakland and put all of the leadership elements learned earlier in the day into action. Engage with communities around Oakland and learn about the rich history of activism and education in the northern California East Bay. The day will end with a recap on how to continue cultivating culturally-sustaining leadership and how to impact their colleges and communities as an Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander student leader.
